Hooded Crow. The autumn light is a wonder.

Marsh Harrier is hunting roosting starlings. It is very dangerous - should this male get to close in or under the flock - then he will be a target of the starlings eruptive shitting and puking in order to chase him away. Unwary young raptors have died in this way. From "Sort Sol" (Black Sun) in Denmark where flocks of hundreds of thousands of starlings are roosting in the marshlands.

"Sort Sol" - Black Sun is a phenomenon where thousands of starlings are roosting together for the night when migrating south or north in autumn and spring. The starling are feeding on the fields in the marshlands of south-western Jutland in Denmark. As a protection against predators they are spending the night together. Henrik Karlsson and I are working on them since days back  and despite our flock of 300 000 starlings - its a struggle to get the huge "ball" - the black sun, and the weather is not on our side either.

The most of our Ospreys are now on their way to West Africa. It is a world-wide species and a fishing expert. Some of the experienced individuals we photographed recently in Finland are much better than the yearlings. The old ones would simply fly in - focus - dive and leave with a fish. The young ones would circle and circle and focus and dive or stop diving and redo the whole process. When they finally swooped down and got a fish they would very often loose it. Some would make up to 8-9 dives before having a meal.
Tomorrow my colleague Henrik and I are off to "Sort Sol" and waders in Denmark. The weather-forecast is not on our side.
Thanks to Finnature.

Whats wrong with the Swedish government ???? --- Seriously ????

A proposition is now on for reduced populations of endangered and threatened animals like wolves, wolverines, bears and lynxes. Even hunting on the now protected Golden Eagle is on the table. For some species the minimizing or culling is by 50%.
All for "fishing" for votes in the coming elections - and as present to the Center (farmer) party so they wont slip under the marginal of being excluded in the next parliament.
MANY third world countries with really bad economies are doing more for their big predators. And here we are talking about real clashes between human interests and predators like in Kenya or Namibia.
THIS IS A SCANDAL AND A DISGRACE FOR SWEDEN - a setback of many decades in understanding ecology and nature.

Home from Finland with Henrik Karlsson and Antti Vierimaa. Ospreys, ospreys and more ospreys. This image is not the most artistic but one of the most difficult behavioral situations I ever shot. It took days and tons of images with absolutely nothing on - before I "bagged" the Osprey when it plunges into the water like an arrow. The speed is amazing. Thanks to Finnature !

Migration time is on full speed. Waders are moving southwards from Arctic shores and tundras. Always on the alert with a good reason. A Merlin and a Peregrine hunted them over and over again at a Swedish West-Coast locality. Sanderling and Dunlins on the image.

Days with strong winds, wrong winds, rain and other factors unknown for us humans have stalled the migration of Honey buzzards. They are now "piling" up waiting for the right circumstances and yesterday some daring hundreds took the chance in the midst of strong winds and rains and passed Falsterbo channel. Today looks good !
